Re "Senator could make leadership history" (Capitol & California, Dec. 26): Something you need to know about Senator Holly Mitchell is that she's trying to reverse important welfare reforms. The purpose behind welfare reform 20 years ago was to keep it from becoming a way of life for recipients for generations. The senator recently sponsored AB 271, which would have allowed additional benefits for children that are born 10 months after a recipient begins receiving aid. Fortunately, the bill failed, but she has vowed to make another attempt next year. She will keep trying to increase and extend benefits. Rather than alleviating child poverty, Mitchell will further it by undoing welfare forms already in place.
