Reformers don't understand public schools

Re "Rhee improves school system" (Letters, Dec 30): I'm guessing that letter writer John Finegan, like so many who talk about education reform, has not been in a classroom in decades. Otherwise he would not be praising Michelle Rhee. She and her organization StudentsFirst, do attack teachers. Rhee wants to dismiss teachers based on test scores, without giving any credence to other issues. The writer says that the status quo is not working in schools, but he is wrong. He has bought the myth that public education is on the downhill, when just the opposite is true. To learn the truth about public education, I would recommend books by Diane Ravich.
