Re "Millions feel pain of unemployment" (Letters, Jan. 2): My opinion is that Lt. Col. Stephen Preston's pension should not be cut. It has been my experience that our military veterans earn every penny of their pensions. Military families not only have the worry of their dad or mom losing their life in the service of their country, but also they often have to move to other locations. Those in the military also deal with long deployments and low pay. The hope of a retirement pension and a second career is one of the reasons our military is superior to armed forces in the rest of the world. I am more upset at the huge pensions given to city managers, assistant city managers, college presidents, and many other bureaucrats that have far less than 25 years of public service and never had to put their lives in harm's way.
