Tomatoes for Thanksgiving? Here’s the proof

Sacramento Bee readers share their gardening adventures.

Nothing says “Sacramento gardening” quite like home-grown tomatoes. And there are few harvests as prized as ripe tomatoes for Thanksgiving – or later.

Meg and Dennis Bryerton shared these snapshots of their backyard jewels and how they got them.

“We took these pictures on November 24th,” they wrote. “We’re still enjoying our tomatoes!!!!”

To prolong their harvest into frosty winter, they protected their vines with cloth sheets and towels. Green tomatoes continued to ripen once brought into their warm and cozy kitchen, which undoubtedly felt a lot more like tomato weather to their very late crop.
