State jobs website reopens ahead of schedule

California’s portal to state government jobs went live Sunday, according to the California Department of Human Resources, more than a day ahead of schedule.

The website, jobs.ca.gov, had been out of commission last week while technicians installed updates to the system as part of four-year $10 million upgrade. On Sunday, key web pages that disclose exam bulletins, test scores and job vacancy postings went live again.

Certain parts of the site will be intermittently closed through Jan. 22 while programmers make more changes, said department spokeswoman Pat McConahay.

For example, website users can’t see how many people are on various eligibility lists, she said. Programmers are retooling that function to comply with new laws that give veterans top ranking, regardless of their score, if they pass a civil service exam.

The Exam and Certification Online System project aims to make job application easier for the public and quicker for the state. It’s also something of a test for state-employed information technology staff who are handling the project entirely in-house instead of farming it out to private-sector contractors.
