Granite Bay man’s arrest in stolen-vehicle case turns up evidence of identity theft

Published: Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 - 7:10 pm

A Granite Bay man was arrested Monday on suspicion of vehicle theft after detectives, while on the phone with the victim, spotted in him a stolen U-Haul pickup at a Rocklin hotel.

Detectives from the Placer County Regional Auto Theft Task Force found the stolen pickup about 2:30 p.m. at the Heritage Inn. While they were speaking with the victim by phone, a man later identified as Luke Longstreet of Granite Bay came out of the hotel and got into the vehicle, according to a Rocklin Police Department news release. With the assistance of Rocklin police officers, detectives stopped the vehicle as it left the parking lot. Longstreet, 29, was taken into custody without incident.

Police said a search of the vehicle turned up narcotics, stolen mail, stolen checks and significant evidence of identity theft. Also found inside the vehicle and the hotel room Longstreet had rented were blank checks, laser printers and check printing software – items commonly used in identity theft.

Police said numerous victims have been identified, and task force detectives are conducting a follow-up investigation to locate additional victims.

They say the case should serve as a reminder to residents to use a secure, locked mailbox when possible and to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.

Longstreet was booked into Placer County Jail on suspicion of vehicle theft, as well as offenses including receiving stolen property, burglary, forgery and possession of a controlled substance.
