Re "Schools need layered support" (Letters, Jan. 7): Letter writer Ted Wattenberg was off base in his assumptions about Sanger schools but correct that some money was involved. As a teacher in Sanger from 2001 to 2012, I witnessed the amazing growth in our students academic abilities. A majority of students are from low socioeconomic and often non-English-speaking households. Parents cared about their children but had no time, money or resources to donate. There was no community shaping the improvements, as he suggested. What Sanger schools did have that was not mentioned in Dan Walters' column was to provide training for all new methods to be implemented, to offer support and leadership from school administration, to update classroom technology, including smart boards, and Internet access for staff, and set decent pay and benefits. Most importantly, the school district cultivated a climate that made teachers feel valued and appreciated.
