Walt Gray is a familiar face to generations of Sacramento viewers of TV news, but he says he isn‘t looking to run against T om McClintock for a seat in Congress.

Republican Ray Haynes is weighing a run for Congress in the Southern California desert. In an email to supporters, the former state lawmaker said he may seek the 36th Congressional District seat held by freshman Rep. Raul Ruiz, a Democrat. Haynes’ entry would complicate what was expected to be a two-way race between Ruiz and GOP Assemblyman Brian Nestande, considered a moderate voice. Ruiz emerged as a top target of Republicans after soundly defeating former Rep. Mary Bono Mack in 2012.

Rep. Walt Gray? Thanks,

but no thanks, he says

Sacramento newsman Walt Gray could have been a contender – if not for another local Emmy – for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Instead, the veteran TV newscaster and motorcycle enthusiast withdrew himself from contention Tuesday just hours after acknowledging he’d been urged to challenge Republican Rep. Tom McClintock for the sprawling 4th District.

In a prepared statement posted by his employer, KXTV-TV, Gray said he was humbled and flattered to have been contacted about running. “I truly love spending time in that part of the state,” he said. “It's just not something that I can see doing.”

Who knows what could have resulted from his candidacy, particularly as an independent, said Tony Quinn, a political analyst and former Republican legislative aide.

“A candidate that can appeal to the Democrats and the independents and the disaffected Republicans could work,” Quinn said.

Jon Huey, McClintock’s campaign manager, also was upbeat about the prospect. “Tom has known and liked him for many years,” Huey said, “and believes he would be an interesting and articulate voice in the race.”
