Don’t use eminent domain on stores

Re "City to sue over parcel" (Page A1, Jan. 8): Just when I thought that the Sacramento City Council was making moves to improve downtown, it is filing a lawsuit to kick out former Macy's men's clothing and furniture store, part of a longtime downtown anchor that has withstood the poor decisions of the K Street Mall and downtown business closures. The city claims its use of eminent domain is in the public interest, but if the city encourages downtown stores to stay in business, they will attract more business. If the city kicks them out, downtown business will only decline. The fact that the lawsuit comes because of an arena is amazing. Will the Kings be as loyal to Sacramento as Macy's has proven to be? This is a waste of taxpayer dollars.
