Sacramento library readers really like suspense thrillers. And Fifty Shades of Grey novels (if they can quietly check out digital copies).

Local residents check out more than 7.5 million items from the Sacramento Public Library system each year. Lately, they've been using more digital copies of books -- 300,000 ebooks were checked out last year, compared to 180,000 in 2012.

Here are the books checked out most often from the Sacramento Public Library system in 2013, broken down into three categories (Hard Copy; Digital; Children's):



Top 10 Adult Books (Hard Copy Books + Books on CD)
10: Fifty Shades of Grey:The start of E.L. James' erotic series about sex, love and domination.
9: Inferno:Dan Brown's latest thriller follows characters introduced in The Da Vinci Code.
8: Born to Be Wild:Christine Warren's fantastical book about a veterinarian in a town full of werewolves.
7: Catching Fire:The second book in Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games series was a hit movie last year.
6: The Black Box:A suspense novel from Michael Connelly about the murder of a photographer during the LA riots.
5: The Casual Vacancy:JK Rowling, famous for the Harry Potter series, switches gears with a book about an English village.
4: The Racketeer:John Grisham's thriller about the murder of a federal judge.
3: A Wanted Man:Jack Reacher decides to hitchhike. Furious action and deep conspiracy ensues in this novel by Lee Child.
2: Notorious Nineteen: Janet Evanovich's novel about bounty hunter Stephanie Plum chasing down a thief and a hot cop.
1: Gone Girl: A woman vanishes on her fifth anniversary in Gillian Flynn's suspense thriller.
