Sacramento-area drivers age 65 and older can tune up their driving skills Saturday through a refresher course offered by the California Highway Patrol.
The “Age Well, Drive Smart” course is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon at the CHP’s Valley Division office, 2555 First Ave., Sacramento.
The goal of the program is to help seniors maintain their driving independence for as long as they can safely drive. The course aims to help participants improve their driving skills and refresh their knowledge of the rules of the road, as well as how to adjust to normal age-related physical and mental changes, according to a CHP news release.
In 2011, 11.7 percent of California residents were 65 or older, compared with only 9 percent in 1970, according to the state Department of Finance. With the aging of the baby boomers, people 65 and older are expected to account for 15 percent of California’s population by 2020.
