Re "States step up anti-abortion legislation" (Page A1, Jan. 4): Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards is correct when she says, "...we are witnessing a catastrophe for Texas women." The catastrophe is allowing thousands of abortions. I submit that the one prerequisite to an abortion should be the requirement of an ultrasound. A sonogram transforms the argument about life from a belief into an observable fact. When most mothers see their unborn child and hear the heartbeat, everything changes. Richards needs to understand that abortion remains our greatest social injustice. Every day in the United States, 3,300 abortions are performed. Anti-abortion restrictions are necessary. Martin Luther King said, "Morality cannot be legislated, but behavior can be regulated. Judicial decrees may not change the heart, but they can restrain the heartless."
