Sacramento police have released composite sketches of a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy in a south Sacramento neighborhood on Christmas.

The sketches depict the same suspect as described by two separate witnesses, according to a Police Department news release.

Officers responded about 9:44 p.m. Dec. 25 to the 7400 block of 29th Street regarding a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a teenage boy suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The youth, identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Brayan Castanon, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries and died Dec. 28.

During the investigation, officers discovered that other people also had been struck by gunfire. An additional victim, also in his teens, arrived at a hospital and medical staff members informed police the youth had suffered injuries that were not life threatening. A short time later, a third teenage shooting victim was found near the scene of the shooting and taken to a hospital. Police said he, too, was expected to survive.

The suspect depicted in the sketches is described as being in his late teens, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 140 to 160 pounds, with “twisted” hair.

No arrests have been made and detectives are working to determine a motive for the shootings. Police said it appears the victims were among a group of teenagers who were approached by two suspects on foot. A brief verbal altercation escalated when the two, reportedly adult, suspects produced guns and began shooting at the victims.

Anyone with information pertaining to the case is asked to call the Police Department’s dispatch center at (916) 264-5471, or Crime Alert at (916) 443-4357, or text a tip to 274637. Enter SACTIP followed by the tip information. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
