UPDATE: Suspect in Sacramento County auto parts store killing arrested, authorities say

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says an arrest has been made in the killing of an Elkhorn Boulevard auto parts store employee.

The victim, who has not been identified, died after being shot Thursday evening during an attempted robbery.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman said a call was received about 7:15 p.m. reporting that an employee at the O’Reilly Auto Parts store in the 4000 block of Elkhorn Boulevard had been shot.

According to the preliminary investigation, three employees and two customers were in the store when a man came in and ordered the customers and two of the employees into a back room, Bowman said. He demanded that the third employee open the cash register. As the employee went open the register, he and the suspect apparently began fighting and the employee stabbed the suspect. The suspect then shot the employee and fled without receiving any money.

Hearing the gunshot, another employee came out of the back room and found his wounded co-worker on the floor.

The wounded employee, a 22-year-old man whose name has not been released, was transported to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Bowman said it is not known in what part of the body the suspect was stabbed, but she said there was a significant amount of blood in the store and leading from the scene.

Deputies set up a perimeter, and Bowman said they initially thought the suspect might be in an apartment complex behind the strip mall where the auto parts store is located.

They broke down the perimeter after failing to find the suspect, but as of 10 p.m., Bowman said a large number of deputies were still searching the area.

The suspect was described as a black man in his 20s, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing dark clothing, including a hooded sweatshirt and a covering over part of his face.
