UPDATE: Police identify alleged carjacker accused of stabbing motorist

Published: Friday, Jan. 10, 2014 - 5:25 pm

The suspect in a carjacking that led to a high-speed chase and crash on a Sacamento freeway Friday morning has been identified by Sacramento police as 21-year-old Maximiliano Hernandez.

The California Highway Patrol said that the chase ended about 9:30 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5, just north of Interstate 80, slowing traffic on the way to the airport.

A Sacramento Police Department spokesman said the incident began when a motorist was carjacked about 9 a.m. in the 200 block of Richards Boulevard. A man in his 20s stabbed the unidentified motorist more than once and took the victim’s vehicle.

The motorist was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Officers were on the scene very quickly and pursued the stolen vehicle south on I-5 before the suspect turned the stolen vehicle around and headed north. The stolen vehicle crashed into a freeway overpass abutment.

Police said Hernandez had minor injuries and will be booked into Sacramento County Jail after receiving treatment.
