'Chef' shows Hollywood still hot for food truckers

It used to be reporters. Cops. Stockbrokers. Architects.

But a new job has been taking a starring role in Hollywood in recent years. Food-truck operator.

Jason Segel operated his 9-1-Yum food truck in “The Five-Year Engagement” which co-starred Emily Blunt. “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” featured two mobile gourmands – Anna Kendrick’s Rosie drove a truck called Cheezy Rider and Chase Crawford’s Marco manned The Great Big Pig. In “Think Like a Man,” Michael Ealy (star of Fox’s TV drama “Almost Human”) climbed behind the wheel of his own four-wheel eatery.

While none of those rom-coms broke big, there’s another vehicle warming up its engine. Austin’s South by Southwest Film Festival recently announced that its opening night film will be the world premiere of “Chef,” a movie by Jon Favreau, the creative force behind ’90s neo-lounge, zeitgeist-grabber “Swingers.”

Favreau wrote, directed and stars “in the film about a chef who loses his restaurant job and tries to rebuild his life by opening a food truck. The cast includes Sofia Vergara, Scarlett Johansson, John Leguizamo, Bobby Cannavale, Dustin Hoffman and Robert Downey Jr.,” according to AP.

“Chef” will screen March 7 at the 10-day film, music and interactive festival. No word yet on when (and if) it could roll into a theater near you.
