Suspect in Friday carjacking booked into Sacramento County jail

Published: Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 - 9:51 pm

A carjacking suspect who was captured after a high-speed chase was booked into the Sacramento County jail today on suspicion of attempted murder, carjacking, and reckless evasion of police.

Maximiliano Hernandez, 21, inflicted multiple stab wounds on an unidentified motorist about 9 a.m. Friday in the 200 block of Richards Boulevard, then fled in the victim’s truck, leaving him at the scene, according to Sacramento police.

Hernandez led police on a wild chase at speeds in excess of 100 mph, first heading southbound on Interstate 5, then back northbound, sometimes speeding the wrong way as he weaved through oncoming traffic. The pursuit ended when Hernandez crashed the truck into a freeway overpass abutment just north of Interstate 80. He was quickly taken into custody, transported to an area hospital with minor injuries and found fit for incarceration.

The motorist, an adult male, was treated for non-life-threatening wounds at a local hospital.
