‘Trickle-down’ economics fizzled out

Re "Trickle-down worked” (Letters, Jan. 8): The letter writer maintains that President Ronald Reagan's “trickle-down economics” worked. However, he failed to look at all the evidence. The website Decisions Based on Evidence provides numerical information comparing growth in investments, productivity, annual gross domestic product, non-farm payroll, median household income and annual hourly earnings. The growth in these areas is compared for the Reagan trickle-down years in the 1980s and non-trickle-down eras, such as the 1990s. The website shows the Reagan era had fewer jobs created, lower middle class income growth and a negative or zero growth in real hourly earnings compared to the 1990s. Historical evidence also shows that the United States has had the strongest periods of economic growth while taxes were high. -- George M. Rose Jr., Rocklin
