Can Congress resolve jobless benefits?

Re “Obama to Congress: Extend jobless benefits” (Page A10, Jan. 8): President Barack Obama has implored Congress to extend jobless benefits, but given the feckless state of politics in Washington by Republicans, Democrats and the president, it could be a real test of government’s ability to get anything done. The political divide that has arisen in the last 20 years affects not only Congress but many citizens, causing hard feelings on all sides. It seems to me this most recent challenge to Washington becomes important on several levels. There are unemployed Americans who desperately need help. Congress and the president need to get started working together and create jobs. Also, for those of us who are disillusioned with the government, seeing such a compromise will be a small signal of hope that we can govern ourselves and meet future challenges.
