Board endorsed Yolo bid for state jail funds

Re "County jails to get millions” (Page B3, Dec. 15): Congratulations to Sacramento County on receiving a $56.4 million SB 1022 award from the state of California for expanded jail facilities to provide rehabilitation, mental health and medical care. The Bee article states that the Yolo County application for this funding lacked a statement of support from its county Board of Supervisors. While this reason appears to apply generally to unsuccessful applications, it does not pertain to Yolo County’s application. At our meeting on Oct. 22, 2013, the board voted unanimously to support the SB 1022 application. Our board strongly supports programs and adequate facilities that reduce recidivism and address the mental and physical health care needs of those who pass through our justice system. We will continue to work to access any and all resources for this purpose.

-- Don Saylor, incoming chairman, Yolo County Board of Supervisors, Woodland
