Chronicling civil-service life for California state workers

A reminder to California state workers: GO HOME IF YOU’RE SICK

Published: Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014 - 3:05 pm

The California Department of Human Resources has issued flu prevention guidelines for state workers in response to signs that illness is hitting employees around the state.

“We’ve been getting inquiries from various state personnel departments and our wellness coordinators around the state for guidelines and information to disseminate to employees, given the number of cases they’re seeing throughout the state,” said CalHR spokeswoman Pat McConahay.

The department doesn’t know how many state workers have been stricken with flu, but seven influenza deaths have been reported statewide, five of them in Sacramento County within the last week or so.

Tips in the CalHR release issued today include:

Employees should stay home or go home when they are sick with influenza symptoms. Staff with symptoms (fever and cough, sore throat, or runny nose) should stay home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medications.

Managers should make sure they follow appropriate sick leave policies.

If there is an increasing number of employees staying home sick, protect remaining employees against the spread of the flu by limiting meetings and conferences. Instead of face-to-face meetings, consider using email, telework, web and teleconferences.

Maintain a supply of face tissues and access to hand-washing facilities.

Post signs informing people to “cover their cough” and wash their hands in facility locations such as entrances, visitation rooms, notice boards and break rooms.
