Dunkin’ Donuts, which has built a franchise empire on sweet treats and highly touted coffee, is planning a major push into California, with the possibility of nearly 100 outlets in the Northern California region by the end of the current decade.

Canton, Mass.-based Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc., parent company of Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins, said it has executed agreements to develop nearly 100 traditional restaurants in California and announced this week that it is “opening Northern California for sale, resulting in the entire state is now available for franchise development.”

The company believes it will eventually have 1,000 Dunkin’ Donuts locations in California.

The company also announced plans to open 685 to 800 new Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins locations internationally in 2014. In 2013, franchisees and licensees opened nearly 800 new restaurants globally.
