Unattended cooking blamed for Carmichael house fire

Published: Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014 - 5:39 pm

A Carmichael man and his four dogs were forced from their home Wednesday afternoon by a fire believed to have started when cooking food was left unattended, according to fire officials.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews responded about 2:26 p.m. to a report of a house fire in the 8600 block of Winding Way. They arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the single-story modular home, according to a district news release.

The sole occupant and his four dogs escaped without injury. The loss due to the fire was estimated at $150,000, officials said, but firefighters were able to save most of the resident’s personal belongings, with and estimated value of $75,000.

The resident told firefighters that he had been cooking, but forgot about it and was not in the house when the fire started. Fire investigators were called to the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

Fire officials remind residents not to leave cooking food unattended, noting that it takes only a few seconds for a fire to ignite and cause serious damage.
