Re Controversy arises over Olympic skating berths (Page C8, Jan. 13): Letting an athlete's performance via an Olympic trial determine who goes to the Olympics seem so natural, but a committee choosing who goes based on past performance seems inherently inappropriate and unfair, especially when the stakes are so high for those involved. My heart aches in sympathy for U.S. figure skater Mirai Nagasu. Not that skater Ashley Wagner doesn't deserve to go, but because the way she was chosen was so unfair to Nagasu. Past performance is no guarantee of how an athlete will perform in the future, and this method of choosing makes it seem like that the results were predetermined. That spoils the spirit of any competition.
