Examine factors behind poverty

Re “To fight poverty, we need new energy and new ideas” (Editorials, Jan. 12): The editorial glosses over the comment about nonprofits and businesses needing to bring new energy and thinking to the problem of poverty. Has The Bee ever done an in-depth examination of the nonprofit sector, including what they have to deal with in helping the less fortunate, those unemployed, underemployed and disabled? It might find that the challenges of the nonprofit sector are more than money. Next, interview a cross-section of teachers and find out what they have to deal with in the classroom with their diverse student body. The bottom line is that it starts in the home. When the parents don't speak English, how can you have a parent-teacher conference? When the state encourages multiple languages in documents, where is the incentive to learn, so that you can compete. Let's get some basics established first: Business hire qualified people. It is the state’s obligation to educate them.
