Elk Grove man dies

after driving into tree

A motorist died Saturday afternoon after his car apparently swerved off a road and hit a tree in Elk Grove, police reported Sunday.

Dewayne Tingwan Chung, 70, was pronounced dead at 2:54 p.m. at a hospital.

He crashed shortly before 2:15 p.m. on Laguna Boulevard near Dwight Road.

Chung, an Elk Grove resident, was headed east on Laguna when his white 1992 Toyota Corolla swerved to the right, crossed two lanes, and hit the tree, Elk Grove police said.

Medics were administering CPR when police officers arrived, according to Detective Josh Magdaleno, a police spokesman.

Chung was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he died.

Magdaleno said it was not immediately clear what prompted Chung’s car to swerve.

“We don’t know if there was a prior medical issue,” said Magdaleno, adding that Chung was going 40 to 45 mph at the time.

The investigation into the collision was ongoing Sunday.
