Suspected drunk driver goes airborne, crashes near I-80

Published: Monday, Jan. 20, 2014 - 9:30 pm

A male driver was hurt early Monday morning when his car went airborne off the Norwood Avenue offramp from I-80 in North Sacramento and landed near a drainage canal.

The man, who was not identified, suffered major injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, according to Michele Gigante, spokeswoman for Sacramento police. She said “alcohol looks to be a factor in the accident,” and authorities are investigating potential driving while intoxicated charges.

The incident started at 2:27 a.m., when police officers were attempting to catch up to a reckless driver in a white Acura sedan going east on Interstate 80, near Northgate Boulevard.

“The white Acura took the Northwood (Avenue) exit at a high rate of speed,” said Gigante. “It launched the vehicle over a fence and onto the other side of the drainage canal.”

It was not known Monday how fast the vehicle was going at the time.

The driver managed to get out from the vehicle on his own, but he was transported to a nearby hospital.
