Re "The lessons of a tragic life and brutal death" (Editorials, Jan. 15): The Bee editorial states, "Too often cops, rather than doctors or nurses, are the first people to face severely mentally ill people." Experience shows that the police should not respond alone. To the policymakers, I suggest that they include psychiatrists and clinical psychologists as members of the first-response team for the severely mentally ill. I hope the policymakers follow the editorial's advice and commit themselves to better training of police and improved care for those who cannot care for themselves.
