Story of killer's release plays on fears

Published: Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 - 11:10 am

Re “Judge lets killer reside in capital” (Our Region, Jan. 18): I am upset by the type of fear the headline and article may engender. The state’s Conditional Release Program, or CONREP, has been treating mentally ill offenders for many years. Few people have heard about it because the program has been successful. Is this man’s release newsworthy only because the person has a mental illness diagnosis? It is this kind of sensationalism that keeps people from seeking mental health services.
