Protesters in Ukraine object to security laws

Re “Protesters clash with police in Ukraine” (Page A7, Jan. 20): As a U.S. citizen and army veteran of Ukrainian descent, I appreciated the article about demonstrators in the Ukraine, but I had one question. Why doesn’t the article state more about the cause behind the demonstrations? The Sacramento area contains thousands of newly arrived Ukrainians who are in touch with their relatives and friends in the old country. From some of them and my relatives in Ukraine, I have learned that the main problem on Sunday was people’s dissatisfaction with the Ukrainian parliament that voted for the laws expressed in the article. As I've heard it, the Ukrainian parliament voted with their hands, rather than taking a written vote, to pass the laws. How can that be a fair voting method, and how can the number of votes for and against the laws be checked?
