Overseas medical work cuts costs

Re “Big bills for little work on patients” (Page A1, Jan. 19): Your article certainly struck home with me. Several years ago, I had two small skin spots removed in the doctor’s office. The procedure took about 20 minutes, and the billing ended up being $1,500. After numerous discussions with our insurance firm and the doctor's office and after various rebilling efforts, we agreed to pay a portion of the billing with the understanding that we would never be back. I now get all of my dermatology and other medical work done in Thailand or the Philippines when we are traveling. The service is excellent, and the costs are reasonable. We pay in cash and cut out the health insurance middleman.
