Update: Two people suffer burns in Rancho Cordova apartment fire that displaces 146 residents

Two people have been taken to UC Davis Medical Center tonight after suffering burns in an apartment fire in Rancho Cordova that displaced 146 residents.

Capt. Jon Rudnicki said Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews responded to the apartment complex at 10531 Mills Tower Drive at 5:28 p.m. after receiving a report that there had been an explosion and people were on fire.

He said two people were transported to the the hospital with burns, but he did not know the severity of the injuries.

Rudnicki said a firefighter also suffered a minor leg injury and was transported to a hospital for treatment and later released.

The fire was quickly brought under control, but Rudnicki said the residents of the building were have not been allowed to return to their apartments because of the explosion and building damage. He said the Red Cross is providing assistance.

Rudnicki said fire investigators are at the scene. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
