No cruel punishments allowed

Re “Execution gets undue press” (Letters, Jan. 20): When I read letters such as those protesting The Bee's reporting of the recent inhumane execution of a convicted murderer in Ohio, I am reminded of how little education we receive about our Constitution. There is an important reason why this execution should trouble every one of us: We, as Americans, are guaranteed that we will not suffer "cruel and unusual punishments" at the hand of our government. It is up to the press, with its own constitutional guarantee, to make certain each of us knows how these rights guaranteed by the Constitution are directly and critically relevant to our lives and the lives of other citizens. Without this knowledge, we cannot be responsible citizens or patriots.
