Re Fighting to stay alive, UCD paper seeks a fee (Our Region, Jan. 18): It's outrageous that the continuation of a university newspaper is even in question, regardless of whether it requires student funding. Online publications may be a growing trend, but printed newspapers are necessary to actually bring the material to readers, instead of relying on them to find it. Ironically, without a university press, most students would not be aware of the egregious budget cuts that compromised the newspaper in the first place. If a transition to online news is the only way to salvage the paper, it needs to happen, but the cost of losing the tradition of an apparently successful university press may outweigh the amount saved by forfeiting the paper. The problem, as it always is with education, is the money: The less the schools get, the worse off the students are.
