Re New doubts on Bay Bridge work (Page A1, Jan. 23): The ever-spiraling revelations regarding the quality of work and the duplicity of oversight on the new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge bring sharply into focus new doubts regarding the proposed Delta tunnels. Though a lower-profile project, the potential exists for widespread, permanent ecological disaster that would result from possible shoddy work, fraud and failed management. The possibility seems very real, given the increasing doubts about the Bay Bridge construction work. Our entire water supply, here and in the south state, could be permanently compromised, all to serve agribusiness in the desert and fracking companies that threaten groundwater supplies with their practices. Better choices are recycling, requiring water conservation and providing incentives for conversion to drought-tolerant landscaping. The state should take these moderate steps first, which would save money. Above all, lets insist on personal responsibility.
