Justin Bieber’s arrest on drunken driving and other charges has drawn most of the attention, but a less-heralded singer from Sacramento also was involved in the Miami Beach traffic stop that is Bieber’s latest high-profile misstep.

R&B singer Khalil Amir Sharieff, 19, and Bieber were arrested Thursday after allegedly drag-racing each other on a Miami Beach street.

Bieber was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, resisting arrest and drag racing. The Associated Press said that the singer, whose professional name is simply Khalil, was booked on suspicion of drag racing and DUI.

Police said Bieber was driving a Lamborghini and Khalil was driving a Ferrari. Both cars were towed. Police say Bieber was clocked at 55 to 60 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Khalil spent much of his youth in Antelope and excelled in sports, according to his biography on the Def Jam records website. When he was 11 years old, his family moved to North Carolina.

When he was about 13 years old, an aunt heard him singing around the house. She encouraged him to upload a singing video so that the rest of the family could see his talent.

A few weeks later, he got an email from a record executive who set up an audition with Def Jam President L.A. Reid. He was almost immediately signed to a recording contract.
