Sacramento, Der Biergarten and the circle of life

For Sacramento’s eating and drinking scene, 2014 has been all about the circle of life.

High-profile Enotria and Restaurant Thir13en announced closures. On the other hand, innovative vegetarian eatery Mother is off to a roaring start, and today at 3 p.m., the long-delayed Der Biergarten in Midtown (2332 K St.) will officially open, offering plenty of outdoor seating where patrons can enjoy any of its 32 beers on tap.

Der Biergarten’s buildings were constructed from re-purposed shipping containers (a Sacramento first), and the establishment had to clear many hurdles and make several concessions before it could finally serve suds-filled steins to the public.

“There will be no oom-pah-pah heralding the opening of Der Biergarten at 24th and K streets, planned for early January. You’ll merely hear beer steins clinking and drinkers conversing, followed by the sound of customers dispersing to an early curfew.

A prohibition on live music and amplified sound, along with an agreement to close earlier than many Starbucks do, are but two concessions that cleared the way in midtown to build Sacramento’s first outdoor beer garden, a first-of-its-kind construction project in the Sacramento region, using industrial shipping containers.”
