Re Extend a simple courtesy by answering phone (Editorials, Jan. 27): It is not just the phone system at the Employment Development Department that has problems, though its pretty awful. Either you get hung up on when you first dial in to EDD, or you get partway through the menu and then get hung up on. The Covered California phone line also kicks callers off. You get referred to the website, and then hung up on. You wait online on the chat for two hours, and then get disconnected. I have a problem with the website, and I can't get hold of anybody to help me. I even called a local insurance agent, and he couldn't figure out the problem, and told me to call them. Maybe since our unemployment rate is so high, we could hire people to man the phones for EDD and Covered California and take messages.
