Sacramento-area gas prices, which have been mostly in retreat since the start of the new year, fell about a penny over the past week, according to gas price tracker GasBuddy.com, which surveys 720 gas outlets in the area.

GasBuddy said the average retail price of gas in the area is $3.40 a gallon. Over the past three weeks, the average price has fallen nearly 12 cents a gallon.

Sacramento-area prices are now 12.4 cents per gallon lower than they were one year ago and 9.5 cents lower than a month ago.

Nationally, the average retail price of gas was unchanged from the previous week, at $3.27 a gallon. That’s 1.6 cents per gallon lower than last month and 4.4 cents below the year-ago average price.

Analysts are predicting stable prices over the coming week but warning of likely increases beginning in February as refineries gear up to produce pricier spring-summer blends of gasoline.
