Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that damaged two homes in Citrus Heights this afternoon.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews responded to a fire in the 6900 block of Escallonia Way about 4:30 p.m. At the time the fire was discovered, a family with two small children was in one of the homes, but they were able to quickly evacuate the house, according to a fire district news release.

Fire crews arrived to find heavy fire between the two homes, involving a shed and extending to both houses. One civilian suffered burn injuries attempting to fight the fire.

Fire officials said the blaze was quickly brought under control. Damage to the two houses was estimated at $150,000, but fire officials estimated $600,000 in structures and contents were saved.
