Brown should shrink deficit

Re “Brown wants to bring some contract jobs in-house” (Page A1, Jan. 20): Thought he is governor of a state with one of the country’s greatest budget deficits, Jerry Brown does not seem to have heard the news. This is not the time for him to get cozy with state union leaders. As a taxpayer, I would rather see his efforts expended toward saving me a couple of bucks on my paycheck. At first glance, his plan seems to limit outsourcing, or external contracting, but I don't trust our already fouled-up system to take on more responsibilities. California's lawmakers and union leaders should worry more about making what we already have in place work. I'd also like to know where the money is going to come from for those new state employees' training and pensions down the road. -- Elaine Lucier, Sacramento
