San Juan Unified School District trustees announced Tuesday night they will search in-house to replace former Superintendent Glynn Thompson, who resigned under pressure last month.

The board will not accept applications from outside candidates, district spokesman Trent Allen said in an email.

Trustees in December accepted Thompson’s resignation – in lieu of trying to fire him – after a district-financed investigation substantiated employee claims of bullying and retaliation. His last day was Jan. 15.

Allen said trustees also named acting Superintendent Kent Kern as the interim superintendent while the search goes forward. The change increases Kern’s annual base salary from $191,250 to $220,000.

In a related matter, Thompson’s last paycheck from the district is due Friday.

The district reported the final paycheck will include Thompson’s base salary, paid at the rate of $225,000 a year, plus $39,290 for 39.2 unused vacation days.

Thompson was placed on administrative leave, with full pay, on May 15. He never returned to work.
