Not helping arena would be costly, too

Re "Arena-vote petitions foul out" (Page A1, Jan. 26): I thought this article by Ryan Lillis, Dale Kasler, and Tony Bizjak was very good. As with any major decision, it is important that we also think about the impact of not supporting a public/private partnership to build the new downtown entertainment and sports complex. The public subsidy opponents reference the lack of guarantees that the related investment in the area surrounding the proposed complex will actually happen. I believe that one outcome is virtually guaranteed. Without the public/private partnership for the new downtown complex, the downtown mall will continue to deteriorate; new investment in the mall will be limited, at best; property taxes and sales taxes will continue to decline; and city services and our quality of life will be negatively affected. I think we should give the city of Sacramento the opportunity to be successful with this important project.
