SATURDAY

Winter Bird Festival

Things are looking up in Galt

What: Birds on the river. Birds in the sunset. Birds in the wetlands. If you want to learn about birds, especially the migratory birds that pass through this area annually, the seventh annual Galt Winter Bird Festival is worthy of your attention. Not only will you have ample opportunity to learn about our fowl visitors from vendors and presentations, but you might be lucky enough to nab a spot on a tour to see the winged creatures in their natural habitat.

When: 8 a.m.-4 p.m.; some tours start at 6 a.m.

Where: McCaffrey Middle School, 997 Park Terrace Drive, Galt

Cost: Free admission; tours $15-$30

Information: (209) 366-7115; www.ci.galt.ca.us

SATURDAY

Museum Day

Never been to the Stanford Mansion? Curious about how the Crocker has changed since your fourth-grade visit? Been meaning to get to the California State Military Museum? This weekend is your chance to visit any of the 28 museums or centers in the greater Sacramento area that will open their doors for free admission for the Sacramento Association of Museums’ 16th annual Sacramento Museum Day. Two more, the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town, will offer half-priced admission.

Plot a strategy for the day to take in a premier museum or two, but don’t overlook the chance to sample a new venue to expand your cultural horizon – say, the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Arts Museum, or the Don and June Salvatori California Pharmacy Museum.

When:10 a.m.-5 p.m.

List of participating museums:(916) 808-7777; www.sacmuseums.org

SATURDAY

Museum Day Highlight

Railroad Museum

What: The crowds will be immense because the museum has what people want: history offered in an engaging way, plenty of enthusiastic docents, and railroad cars you can climb on. What’s not to like about the California State Railroad Museum? Just in case you finish your tours of the locomotives (steam, internal combustion, compressed air and electric) and all the rolling stock, there’s an exhibit that opened just before Christmas that explores the 150 years of California’s state parks.

When: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Where: 125 I St., Sacramento

Cost: Free

Information: (916) 445-6645; www.csrmf.org

SATURDAY

Museum Day Highlight

Governor’s Mansion

What: The current governor spent time there in his youth (although Sutter, his Welsh corgi, did not), and now it belongs to the ages. The Governor’s Mansion State Historic Park includes the 1877 house and grounds. Around every corner inside or out, there is a chance for discovery. This will be the first Museum Day since the upstairs ballroom has been readied for public visits.

When: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Where: 1526 H St., Sacramento

Cost: Free

Information: (916) 323-3047; www.parks.ca.gov

SATURDAY

Museum Day Highlight

Automobile Museum

What: At the California Automobile Museum, you’ll learn about cars, but more than that: You’ll learn about auto culture as it has swept across the country. You might even find yourself reliving a bygone era when you spy a model like one you once owned. An exhibit on dirt track racing closes right after Museum Day.

When: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. (last admission is at 5 p.m.)

Where: 2200 Front St., Sacramento

Cost: Free

Information: (916) 442-6802; www.calautomuseum.org

SATURDAY

Museum Day Highlight

Agricultural museums

What: You can fill the better part of a day absorbing historical details of the equipment and machinery that farmers used to create the state’s agricultural industry at the Heidrick Ag History Center. And sharing the site is the equally impressive Hays Antique Truck Museum.

When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Where: 1962 Hays Lane, Woodland

Cost: Free

Information: (530) 666-9700; www.aghistory.org/
