John Di Stasio, general manager and CEO of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, has been named Large Utility CEO of the Year by Tulsa-based Electric Light & Power magazine.
Di Stasio helped SMUD become the only large utility in California to meet the statewide goal of supplying 20 percent of its power from renewables in 2010 (and) has led the utility to financial stability ... , said Teresa Hansen, editor-in-chief of the magazine, which has covered the electric utility industry since 1922.
The large utility segment comprises North American electric utilities with 400,000 customers or more. SMUD is the nations sixth-largest customer-owned utility, serving 1.4 million people over 900 square miles. It employs more than 2,000 and owns more than 10,200 miles of power lines.
Di Stasio announced last year that he plans to retire in 2014. Di Stasio joined the district in 1981 and was appointed in 2008 to succeed Jan Schori as CEO.
