Covered California, the Sacramento-based health insurance exchange, needs some room to spread out, and it will get that come springtime.
Exchange spokesman James Scullary said Thursday that Covered California recently signed a lease to move into 123,000 square feet of space at 1601 Exposition Blvd., across the street from the Cal Expo complex. The offices were once occupied by Allied Insurance.
He said the move will begin in late April and the lease will take effect May 1.
About 360 employees will be at the new office initially.
Most of Covered California’s operations are now on the second floor of the Downtown Plaza complex at 560 J St. That space is targeted for development of the downtown arena that will be the new home of the Sacramento Kings.
Scullary is eagerly anticipating some room for Covered California to spread out at the new site.
He said the new offices “give us a little room to grow if necessary ... We were looking for something that offers that kind of flexibility.”
He also said the Exposition Boulevard site “met some of our key goals. Everything is under one roof, and we wanted to be as close to downtown as we can get.”
Covered California was created to provide a marketplace for those seeking health coverage under the federal Affordable Care Act. A launch that enrolled nearly a half-million Californians in health insurance plans has been accompanied by various grants.
Last week, Covered California announced a $155 million supplemental federal grant for target outreach and marketing, enrollment assistance, staffing and technology for 2014. That came on top of previous federal grants totaling about $910 million for planning and development of the exchange.
Covered California said last week that it is working to expand marketing and outreach activities, especially those aimed at young adults and uninsured Latinos.
