Re http://www.sacbee.com/2014/01/23/6086711/civil-service.html (Letters, Jan. 24): I agree completely with letter writer Bill Whigams comments regarding the need to get rid of incompetent public workers. I recently retired from a local city government job and witnessed incompetence on a daily basis. Funny thing was, the more incompetent people were, the faster they seemed to rise through the ranks to become senior employees or supervisors. I would go home after a hard days work, wondering how these fellow city employees could live with themselves while collecting the same paycheck I was for one-tenth the work. In today's economy, any job you have is a luxury, not a right. In the real world, employees who goof off all day would be fired on the spot.
