Published: Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 - 10:31 am

A Roseville man died when his speeding car went out of control and slammed into a tree alongside Highway 99 in Sacramento County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s office identified the driver as 22-year-old George R. Lapa.

CHP officer Michael Bradley said that at about 11:50 a.m. Thursday Lapa was traveling southbound on Highway 99 south of Elk Grove at speeds estimated in excess of 100 mph. While attempting to make a lane change, Lapa lost control of his car.

The car slid sideways, traveled onto the right shoulder and became airborne for a short distance. The car then glanced off one tree before striking another one.

The vehicle sustained major driver’s side damage. Lapa died at the scene of the crash, which occurred just north of Dillard Road.
