BOE: Small increases in California’s gas, diesel consumption in third quarter 2013

California’s gasoline consumption increased a modest 0.9 percent in the third quarter of 2013, and diesel fuel consumption increased 4 percent year over year, according to the latest fuel tax data released by the state Board of Equalization.

The BOE’s state taxable gasoline gallons report showed that Californians consumed 3.71 billion gallons of gasoline in the third quarter of 2013, compared with 3.68 billion gallons used in the third quarter of 2012. BOE said the average statewide price of gasoline was $3.99 per gallon in last year’s third quarter, down from $4.05 in the third quarter of 2012.

BOE estimated statewide gasoline tax-related revenue for the third quarter of 2013 at $422 million in sales taxes and $1.5 billion in excise taxes.

In-state diesel use in last year’s third-quarter totaled 705 million gallons, compared with 678 million gallons in the prior year. The average price of diesel fuel in the third quarter of 2013 was $4.06 per gallon, down 14 cents from the same quarter in 2012.

BOE estimated statewide diesel fuel tax-related revenue for the third quarter of 2013 at $251 million in sales taxes and $82 million in excise taxes.
