49ers’ Daniel Kilgore arrested for public intoxication in Tennessee

Offensive lineman Daniel Kilgore, a leading candidate to be the 49ers’ starting center in 2014 and beyond, was arrested and charged with public intoxication last Saturday in his hometown of Kingsport, Tenn., the Times-News in Kingsport first reported Friday.

According to the police report, an officer noticed Kilgore and another man “staggering” along the sidewalk at 2:18 a.m. The officer wrote that he observed that both men had bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils and noticed a “strong odor” of alcohol. He determined both were “too intoxicated to be in public.” They were arrested “for their safety and the welfare of the public.”

Kilgore, 26, played at Appalachian State and was drafted by the 49ers in the fifth round in 2011. He was sent into games as an extra blocker in short-yardage situations – he made an excellent block on Anthony Dixon’s touchdown in the NFC Championship Game – and has been center Jonathan Goodwin’s understudy the last two years.

Goodwin is a pending free agent and is not expected back. That means Kilgore is the likeliest candidate to take over the job with perhaps Joe Looney, a 2012 draft pick, competing for the spot as well.

A statement from the 49ers read: “The 49ers organization is aware of the recent matter involving Daniel Kilgore. We are monitoring the situation closely, but will reserve further comment at this time, as this is an ongoing legal matter.”
